Now you’re just about ready to graduate to the next level, but first we need to see if you’re ready.  On most browsers, you can put the arrow on “Answer” to see what the answer is after you decide what it is, or CLICK on “Answer” to get an explanation with the answer.

QUESTION 1 – What is the area of a room 180 inches by 17 feet?

QUESTION 2 – Which has a greater area, a 20’ x 20’ square, or a circle with a diameter of 23 feet?

QUESTION 3 – If a triangle has a front footage 300 feet, and an area of 15,000 square feet, what is the depth?

QUESTION 4 – What is the decimal equivalent of ⅜ (three-eighths)?  What is that in a percentage?

QUESTION 5 – If the average temperature in a town is 23 degrees in the winter, 69 degrees in the spring, 84 degrees in the summer, and 57 degrees in the fall, what is the average yearly temperature?

QUESTION 6 – Quasimoto rings the bell in the bell tower once every fifteen minutes, exactly on the quarter-hour.  How many times does he ring the bell from 3 to 4 PM?

QUESTION 7 – What is one-quarter plus one-eighth?

QUESTION 8 – Add three-eighths and 72 percent.

QUESTION 9 - Multiply two hundred by two-thirds.

QUESTION 10 – Multiply two-fifths by three-eighths.

QUESTION 11 – What is the square footage of a lot that is 400 feet by one mile?

The answers are below!

(Piece of cake, right?)

ANSWER 1 – 180 inches is 15 feet, so this room is 15’ x 17’, which gives us 255 square feet.

ANSWER 2 – A 20’ x 20’ square has 400 square feet (just multiply it out).  A circle with a diameter of 23 feet has a radius of 11.5 feet (23 divided by 2).  The radius squared is 11.5 x 11.5 which equals 132.25.  Multiply that by 3.14 which gives you 415.265 square feet for the circle, so the circle has a greater area.

ANSWER 3 – Going backwards, the first thing we do is multiply the area by 2, since the last thing we do going forward is to divide by 2.  So, 15,000 x 2 = 30,000.  30,000 divided by the dimension we know, 300’, will give us the dimension we don’t know, which is 100 feet.

ANSWER 4 – All we do here is put the top number (the numerator) into our calculator first, then divide by the bottom number.  So, 3 divided by 8 equals 0.375.  To convert that to a percentage, just move the decimal point two places to the right, which would give us 37.5%.

ANSWER 5 – All we’re doing here is averaging four numbers, so 23 + 69 + 84 + 57 = 233, divided by 4 (because we’re averaging 4 numbers) equals 58.25 degrees.

ANSWER 6 – This is another lesson in paying careful attention.  The answer is 5.  He rings the bell at 3:00, 3:15, 3:30, 3:45 and 4:00.  That’s five times.

ANSWER 7 – The easiest thing to do here is to convert them to decimals.  One-quarter is .25.  One-eighth is .125.  Add them together on your calculator and that gives you .375.  If you want to add the fractions together, you have to convert one –quarter to two-eighths, which is the same thing.  So, one-eighth plus two-eighths gives us three-eighths, which as we know from question 4, is .375 (the same thing we got when we added them as decimals).

ANSWER 8 – We already know from question 4 that three-eighths is 37.5%.  Then, 37.5 + 72 = 109.5, so our answer is 109.5%.  DON’T HIT THE PERCENT KEY ON YOUR CALCULATOR AT ANY POINT IN THIS QUESTION!  That is only used when you want a percentage of the previous total.  That would give us 64.5, which is WRONG!

ANSWER 9 – This is 133.333.  This can be done one of two ways.  Two-thirds in decimals is .66666666, which can be multiplied by 200 to get an approximate answer.  The other option is to convert 200 to 200 over 1, which is the same number (Remember, any number is the same as that number over 1).  Then we multiply the top numbers in our fractions (the numerators) from 2/3 and 200/1.  So 2 X 200 = 400.  Then we multiply the bottom numbers (the denominators), so 3 X 1 = 3.  Then we divide our top number, 400, by our bottom number, 3.  So 400 ÷ 3 = 133.333 (Round off wherever you like).

ANSWER 10 – Six-fortieths, or three twentieths or .15.

ANSWER 11 – 400’ x 5280’ = 2,112,000 square feet.
